The long awaited Facebook’s Dark Mode is here. Various online sources have been able to enable the feature, showing a questionable design choice. Instead of using blacks in the theme (like most other dark modes), Facebook’s Dark Mode utilizes various shades of dark grey. Facebook’s Dark Mode is still in development, so the company may tweak the feature to use true blacks. Currently, Dark Mode can either be enabled manually through the app’s settings or can automatically shift based on the phone’s Dark Mode preferences.
This is an interesting design choice; the recent trend for Dark Mode settings in mobile apps has mainly grown due to the rise in popularity of OLED displays. OLED-based phones display blacks by turning individual pixels off. This means that not only do Dark Modes offer improved contrast, but they can also save battery life by turning off pixels across the screen.
The bright white space of Facebook’s interface can strain your vision after long hours of browsing. Give your eyes a break by enabling Facebook’s Dark Mode. Change the new interface from light to dark by activating this setting. Facebook’s Dark Mode isn’t like other dark modes, though, as it seems to be composed of dark greys rather than true blacks.
Before you can use Facebook dark mode on desktop, you need to enable the new Facebook design on your desktop.
